Elegance and glamour colored this seaside wedding in pastel hues. Our bride Mai was a vision in her jeweled, sweet-heart wedding gown, stealing her groom's breath during their “first look.” Mai and Theo exchanged vows and rings with the ocean as their backdrop and a rainbow of flowers and driftwood framing them. The ceremony ended with a beginning – a beginning symbolized by the releasing of butterflies into the tropical air – the beginning of a new adventure and a new life of eternal togetherness. It was truly a beautiful day and an honor to be a part of.

Theo had an elbow injury and I was working at a Sports Medicine Clinic. This was a time in Theo's life where he consistently did Crossfit, win Stairclimb races, and push his body to the edge. He had to slow down a little with this injury. He participated in a tennis elbow study where he visited the clinic I worked at every month to answer the questions for the clinical trial and to participate in some natural injections.
He asked me out to go hiking a few times over the phone. I always said no but one day I finally agreed. Our hikes got longer, blossomed into movie dates, dinners out, reading together, snowboarding trips, and eventually led to where we are now. We still continue hiking and did a post-wedding hike at Haleakala Volcanic mountain the days after the ceremony.
Theo proposed to me in the most creative way. It was a Friday morning, and he texted me that he had left a surprise for me in the car. When I got to the car, I found a silver grey box with a ribbon on it. Inside there was a treasure map. We always wrote little fun notes for each other on a regular basis so although this gesture was very romantic, it was not completely out of the ordinary for us.
I plugged the treasure map's latitude and longitude points into my iPhone map and drove up the windy roads of the Hollywood Hills. I drove up there just before the sunset and was driving closer to the Hollywood sign when I saw a heart on it. It was similar to the heart we saw on our first Hollywood Lake hike. As I drove closer I saw the proposal, “marry me?!”. Theo jumped out of his car, roses in one hand, champagne in the other, ring in his pocket, proposal on the mind (he had been waiting for hours), and we enjoyed the sunset together. Later that night, we celebrated with our friends and champagne.
We had been on a vacation to Maui for Theo's birthday. When we had difficult times in our relationship we remembered back to how we felt when we were in Maui and the love we had for each other. We decided we wanted to hold onto these feelings of love and bliss and return to Maui to get married. We wanted our wedding to be classical, romantic, playfully detailed, and unique. Bliss helped us bring our wedding dreams into reality.
One of the most special moments of our wedding day was the butterfly release. The butterflies symbolize longevity and acceptance for change – to embrace change and gratitude for growth. It also represents transcendence as the butterflies are released into the world and flow where the winds will take them. There is also free will in this flight. We believe love and true relationships built on a solid foundation can transcend through time and distance. Theo and I had a long distance relationship for years so this faith in the transcendence of love really holds us together. – Mai, the bride
